To provide an understanding of the principles and methods of façade construction.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the Unit the students must demonstrate an understanding of the analytical methods and practical techniques for the acoustic design of buildings and external noise environment. Students must also demonstrate a full understanding of how to assess the fire performance of façades and their elements.

Skills:
Ability to analyse and modify the internal acoustic environment. Ability to assess the fire risk its structural implications on façade integrity. This is taught, facilitated and assessed. Oral communication skills facilitated in a multi-disciplinary group environment. Written communication skills assessed.

Content:
Room acoustics: introduction to the decibel, sound propogation, sound in rooms, absorption, reverberation time and room acoustic design.
External noise environment.
Noise control: sound insulation by partitions, cavity constructions in masonry, glass and light-weight materials, acoustic properties of building envelopes, practical solutions and current legislation.
Fire performance, installation and operation of: insulated panels, curtain walls, fire-resistant glass and glazing systems and rainscreens.
