| Description:
| Aims: To introduce students to the skills required for retrieving information from a variety of sources of Chemical Literature and for reporting the information in written and oral formats. Learning Outcomes: After studying the Unit, students should be able to: * Recognise and use appropriate text and electronic sources of chemical information; * Assemble information from a number of sources into a coherent report; * Assess the reliability and significance of chemical information according to the topic under study; * Prepare and deliver an oral presentation using appropriate visual aids. Skills: Planning and organisation (T, F, A), Study skills (F), Information and communication technology (T, F, A), Written communication (T, F, A), Oral communication (T, F, A). Content: In conjunction with a supervisor, a topic of recent research or other chemical significance will be selected. Several key references will be identified and the student will use these as a basis to prepare a detailed, critical survey of the area. A tutor will be assigned to each student to monitor progress and give advice (including formative feedback). Students will prepare a written report and also a short oral presentation on the selected topic. Students will attend a presentation by the Chemistry Librarian on the use of appropriate information sources. |
