The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the academic field of sport and exercise psychology by:
a) Introducing students to key theory relating to motivation, confidence, anxiety, group processes, personality, and exercise psychology.
b) Demonstrating how such theory may have important implications for sport, physical activity and exercise.
c) Exposing them to current ideas and research related to the socio-psychology of sport, health, exercise and physical activity.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
a) Identify and explain selected psychological constructs and theories and discuss their application to sport, health, physical activity and exercise
b) Identify and understand the implications of individual differences to teaching, coaching, and participation in sport and exercise.
c) Illustrate how group and social processes can influence thoughts and behaviours in sport and exercise contexts.

a) Trait and biological approaches to personality
b) Behavioural approaches to personality
c) Contemporary approaches to motivation
d) Confidence and self-efficacy
e) Models of anxiety in sport psychology
f) Aggression in athletes and spectators
g) Basic theories of group dynamics
h) Exercise adherence
i) Exercise and depression
j) The application of music in sport and exercise.
