This unit considers the importance of building trusting, respectful relationships with parents, families, carers and other professionals. It will examine the different ways practitioners communicate and interact with families, and explore different family structures and parenting styles. It will require students to investigate their own values and beliefs and the impact that these may have on others. It will identify the importance of working effectively with other professionals.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:

Content:
Identification and analysis of communication will be discussed as an active process which involves listening, questioning, body language, understanding, responding and empathy. The importance of good communication will be emphasised as a tool for building trusting relationships.
Communication theory will be discussed such as Egan's Skilled Helper, Scheflen, Laver and Hutcheson, and Stevens.
Culture and context will be considered as well as different family structures and parenting styles and how attitudes, values and belief systems may impact on families.
Working as part of a team will be considered and best practice will be discussed regarding how to work effectively with others. The concept of integrative working will be explored.
