The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the terminology of research and consider the advantages and disadvantages of methods and approaches to research. It will also give students the skills to write an academic literature review.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* Identify and evaluate a range of research methods and techniques appropriate to workplace settings and practice;
* Demonstrate an understanding of the research process and the ethical issues related to the conduct of a research project;
* Identify and justify an appropriate topic for a literature review - based on practice;
* Review, select and evaluate a range of literature relevant to Early Years/childhood research and practice.

Content:
This unit will introduce students to the process of research. It will identify and assess a range of research methods and techniques appropriate to the workplace and practice. It will consider a range of methodologies and methods; in particular it will consider the voice of the child in research and a multi-method approach to analyse evidence based practice. It will explore ethical considerations in research. It will examine the importance of researching for and constructing an appropriate literature review to inform practice.
