This unit will enable students to gain a broad understanding of working with children with special needs and identify strategies and approaches to support the children. This unit also considers barriers to child health and national initiatives to promote children's health.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* Recognise and evaluate legislative frameworks for supporting children with SEN;
* Identify and discuss different special needs and reflect on educational and supportive approaches;
* Identify and evaluate strategies for promoting health and well-being in children;
* Identify and evaluate barriers to children's health and well-being.

Content:
* Understand the legislative requirements of the Code of Practice of Special Educational Needs and other legislative Frameworks including the principle of early intervention.
* To understand specific and differentiated needs of children with special educational needs and disabilities and reflect on how this can be related to the rights of the child.
* Develop and promote effective strategies for working with children with special educational needs
* Recognise when to refer to other professionals for advice on children's learning or development
* Understand the importance and value of observations and record keeping in the workplace
* Recognise the importance of promoting health and well-being in children
* Recognise barriers to children's health and well-being and the effects of these barriers.
