The unit will explore different pedagogical approaches and philosophies and enable students to reflect on the children's experience of their learning environment and relate this to curriculum development and justification.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* Identify and discuss the child's experience of the learning environment ensuring that the child's voice is heard.
* Identify and critique appropriate pedagogical theories and philosophies
* Analyse child observations linking these to theory.
* Justify curriculum planning against the needs of the child and current government frameworks and guidelines.
* Evaluate the effectiveness of the learning environment.
* Reflect on own role as a practitioner and facilitator of children's learning.

Content:
* This unit will explore significant and emerging pedagogical theories of how children learn.
* It will consider how to develop an effective learning environment that supports these theories.
* Appropriate observation skills will be analysed - leading to effective planning, evaluation and assessment.
* Appropriate curriculum requirements will be analysed in order to meet the needs of all children, taking into account current government guidelines and frameworks.
* The role of the reflective practitioner will be explored and developed.
