The course aims to consolidate language already acquired, for example in Stage 3 Semester 1, and to encourage students to extend their active and passive vocabulary, to improve accuracy and the complexity of the language used, to increase their confidence in using the target language for spontaneous responses. The course aims to help students access increasingly more demanding reading and listening material.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the course students will be able to
* Use the target language in a variety of situations and for a variety of purposes
* Give clear detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest expanding and supporting ideas with subsidiary points and examples
* Use simple language to express their opinions
* Understand the gist and detail of recorded audio material on topics of personal and general interest
* Find specific, predictable information in everyday material using characters and understand informal letters relating to personal information.
* Write messages and short personal letters using characters
* Actively use a minimum of 180 characters.

Content:
The course consolidates previously acquired language structures and skills and develops the four core competences of listening, speaking, reading and writing. More complex language structures are introduced and practised, such as the conditional. Reading and listening material on new topic areas will help students extend their passive vocabulary. Topics of general interest and cultural relevance will be presented, helping students to express and dispute opinions and to encourage spontaneous responses. The course significantly extends the students' passive knowledge and active accurate use of Chinese characters.
