Follow this link for further information on unit content Description: Aims:

* To identify a prospective research question for a research project
* To identify and defend a potential research approach and methodology
* To develop an outline protocol and project plan.
* To develop and rehearse the range of skills of a competent researcher.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit the student will be able to:
1. Identify a research area relevant to their practice
2. Demonstrate the format of a good research question and define a question appropriate for their research area
3. Describe and critically review the philosophy and methodology which underpins the approach and methodology appropriate to addressing this question.
4. Conduct a critical review of the literature which underpins the research area and which leads to the research question
5. Identify SMART aims and objectives of a research project
6. Identify the key stages in project planning including: identifying and managing stakeholders, time management, finances, data management - retrieval and analysis, project reporting.
7. Apply these project management skills to the development of an outline research protocol.
8. Consider ethical and governance issues in practice based research
9. Complete at least one cycle of a personal development plan and to identify goals in research and continuing professional development
10. Reflect on own development as a researcher in practice within the timeframe of the PDP cycle
11. Present developing research ideas to peers
These learning outcomes will be taught, facilitated and assessed.

Skills:
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Literature review. Apply results of their enquiry to the development of a prospective research question (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: facilitated and assessed).
2. Develop an outline proposal for a research topic suitable for developing to eventual completion as their dissertation project (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: taught and assessed).
3. Understand the ethical and governance considerations in a research project. (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: facilitated and assessed).
4. Present developing research ideas (Knowledge and understanding, intellectual and professional skill: taught and assessed).

Content:
1. The content of this Unit will focus on any area of health or related research for which an adequate level of supervision can be offered.
2. Project design and management: learning skills to review literature, identifying a prospective research question, design an outline protocol, understand ethical and governance issues in relation to health practice research.
3. Presentation: oral presentation to peers on developing research ideas and as a portfolio including reflective commentary, learning needs assessment and personal development plan.
