Aims:
The Exercise for Health unit aims to help the sport and exercise practitioner to increase expertise on the application of health behaviour change theories for promotion of active lifestyles. Adopting an evidence-based approach the unit will enable students to critically evaluate current physical activity interventions and it will support them to apply the knowledge to promote physical activity in people with a variety of health conditions and within populations needing special attention.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Critically appraise the determinants of health behaviour choices
* Critically discuss the role of physical activity in the promotion of population health
* Identify the medical conditions commonly encountered in an exercising population and their effect in relation to exercise
* Critically appraise the benefits of physical activity in the management of physical and mental health conditions
* Identify the effect of prescribed medicines on the individual’s ability to exercise Identify the challenges facing deprived communities and ethnic minorities with respect to physical activity and health
* Critically review the benefits and risks of physical activity participation in different population groups
* Justify the effectiveness and the appropriateness of physical activity interventions.
