The aim of this unit is to introduce the spectrum of patient information systems including remote healthcare, specifically clinical system development and evaluation.

Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge and Understanding
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Critically discuss the spectrum of clinical systems and their function in the collection and management of data for patient care including the Electronic Patient Record (EPR)/ Electronic Health Record (EHR) concept
* Demonstrate how systems are developed and the use of modelling techniques
* Critically evaluate the significance of decision support systems to assist with effective and shared decision making
More specifically students should be able to:
* Critically evaluate various systems development and evaluation methodologies
* Critically evaluate user involvement in system development and evaluation
* Discuss the concept of computer anxiety
* Quantitatively evaluate a healthcare information system
These learning outcomes will be taught and assessed.

Skills:
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
* Contribute to effective systems planning and deployment in the healthcare setting (Taught, facilitated and assessed)
* Plan and manage their learning through reflecting on and analysing their own learning needs (Taught and facilitated )
* Integrate and critically evaluate information gathered from a wide range of resources including the unit resources, text books, journal articles, web pages and other online resources. An appreciation for a hierarchy of evidence should be displayed (Taught, facilitated and assessed)
* Communicate effectively with colleagues and tutors including through asynchronous online discussions (Facilitated).

Content:
This unit explores how systems in healthcare may be developed and evaluated to enhance the healthcare process. This unit covers the following topics:
* The spectrum of Patient Information Systems
Specifically it will include:
* User Involvement in Systems
* Healthcare Informatics Implementation
* Clinical terminology
* Standards
* Clinical Systems
* Remote Healthcare.
