To provide students with the opportunity to examine the socio-cultural context of sport through a range of theoretical sociology perspectives and apply this knowledge to a variety of coaching contexts.
To introduce a critical perspective to illustrate the political, economic, historical and social forces impacting on sport coaches. Students will explore ethical dilemmas for individuals and organisational policy responses to issues facing a variety of sports.
The unit will encourage students to reflect upon their own knowledge and experience of sport activities and developments.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the unit students will be able to:
* Identify and outline contemporary issues in sport from a critical and historical perspective;
* Identify and critique sporting cultures and attitudes and values that are developed;
* Identify and critique the contemporary issues facing sport in UK including the influence of media.

Content:
Contemporary Issues; national identity (hooliganism), codification, globalisation, deviance, commercialisation, aggression, media.
Historical issues; folk games, impact of industrial revolution (pre/post).
Constructivist nature of coaches' knowledge, coaches' agency, interaction in the coaching context, coaches' power and how it is used, the coach's social role.
Introduction of philosophical, moral and ethical foundations of sport and the influence of the media on this.
Exploration of the nature of sport and sport coaching through: gender, social class, ethnicity.
