This unit aims to build on students' understanding of the theory, rationale and application of Cognitive therapy to enable them to assess the evidence for the effectiveness of Cognitive behavioural approaches and to implement and integrate such models in their practice.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, students will be able to:
* Analyse the key theoretical concepts underpinning Cognitive and Behavioural approaches
* Understand of the relevance of Cognitive Therapy to their particular counselling setting
* Demonstrate competence in the practical application of Cognitive Therapy derived interventions in an addictions setting, evaluating and reflecting on level attained and the need for further training.
* Demonstrate an understanding of the key research evidence for the effectiveness of the model.

Content:
This unit is concerned with:
* Development of the necessary knowledge, skills and techniques required to develop a cognitive case formulation for clients presenting with problems due to substance misuse.
* Learning skills necessary to implement a CT approach including structuring the session, agenda setting, Socratic questioning and various CT tools are taught at an introductory level.
* Supporting the practical element of this module is the associated research evidence which underpins the techniques used in the above processes. Students are shown how to use this information to inform and develop their clinical practice within the workplace.
