| Description:
| Aims: This unit will review the history, development and availability of 12 Step and other self-help groups and assess the evidence concerning their effectiveness in maintaining recovery. It will enable students to explore and develop skills needed to help clients access and benefit from this resource. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, students will be able to: * Describe the history of 12 Step approaches in treatment, level of provision of AA and NA, and basic principles of 12 Step recovery. * Evaluate potential benefits and limitations of involvement in 12 Step recovery, using research evidence. * Assess clients' level of fit to 12 Step philosophy and identify possible blocks, problems or hazards re affiliation.
