Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aims of this unit are to enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills to apply hydraulic and pneumatic principles to the design and control of automated systems.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students should be able to:
* describe the function and operation of hydraulic system components;
* describe the function and operation of pneumatic system components;
* describe the principle of operation of electrical actuation of pneumatic and hydraulic components;
* design electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic control circuits;
* model electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic control systems;
* fault find and rectify problems in electro-hydraulic and/or electro-pneumatic control systems.

Skills:
During this unit students should gain the following skills:
Intellectual
* gathering, processing and analysing technical information (A)
* formulating outcomes (A)
* designing hydraulic and pneumatic circuits (F,A)
Professional
* using information technology effectively (F,A)
* using software to design circuits (F,A)
Practical
* developing identification and observational skills to maintain records and contribute to reports (T,A)
* applying theoretical principles in the design, testing and fault finding of circuits (F,A)
Key
* writing reports (A)
* application of number (F,A)
* problem solving circuit problems using appropriate software (F,A)

Content:
This unit concentrates on:
* the design and operational characteristics of typical electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic components;
* the operation of typical electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic components;
* logic functions to control pneumatic and hydraulic components;
* electro-hydraulic/electro-pneumatic systems using block diagrams with and without feedback;
* electro-hydraulic/electro-pneumatic circuits incorporating feedback and proportional control;
* practical applications of electro-hydraulic and/or electro-pneumatic control circuits including design, fault finding, rectification and safety considerations.
