The aims of this unit are to:
* investigate lean manufacture;
* investigate process improvement techniques;
* use the techniques of value engineering.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students should be able to:
* describe the principles of lean manufacturing;
* describe and apply the principal process improvement techniques;
* design products using value analysis engineering.

Content:
This unit concentrates on:
* elimination of waste, total quality, just in time (JIT) manufacture;
* sustainability, total productive maintenance (TPM), single minute exchange of dies (SMED), production cell arrangement (U shaped layout);
* continuous improvement (Poke yoke, Kaizan, Schonberger's 17 points for world class manufacturing);
* value engineering techniques, function value analysis and function cost analysis, design for manufacture;
* design for manufacture and assembly.
