The aim of this unit is to introduce the student to techniques used in effective project planning and project management including an understanding of organisational requirements for planning projects.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students should be able to:
* understand project management principles, methodologies, tools and techniques;
* analyse and evaluate project organisational structures;
* prepare and initiate a project plan demonstrating effective teamworking and using appropriate scheduling, estimating, performance management and cost control techniques.

During this unit students should gain the following skills:

* synthesise and evaluate information in order to formulate outcomes (F,T,A)

* making appropriate judgements, oral presentations, effective teamwork (T, F, A)

* carrying out practical and evaluative investigations of engineering systems (F,A)

Content:
This unit focuses on:
* project life cycle
* terminating projects
* project management principles
* project evaluation
* group/team structure, analysis of roles and team effectiveness
* preparation of project plans (use of Gantt charts, Network Diagrams, Critical Path Analysis and PERT)
* scheduling, estimating and control of costs
* project change procedures
* project initiation/start up.
