Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
This unit aims to ensure that students have a foundation of academic English and study skills to enable them to study either Science or Business and Social Sciences at FE level 3, and to prepare them for study at HE level 1. It also aims to prepare students for an optional International English Language Testing System test (IELTS), to be taken during Semester 2. Students will be taught and assessed in two separate strands, so that they can learn within a context specific to their own field (either Science or Business and Social Sciences).

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the unit, within their chosen field, students should be able to:
* plan tasks and assignments effectively;
* obtain and use information from a range of sources to meet the purpose of a task or activity;
* recognise which information is relevant;
* organize relevant information clearly and coherently;
* produce short clear and relevant written and oral assignments (such as summaries, reports, essays, oral presentations) appropriate to purpose and situation;
* listen and respond appropriately in academic contexts;
* achieve an enhanced IELTS score in all four skills in Semester 2 (where this option is taken).

Skills:
The unit draws upon core aspects of key skills at level three and achieves an equivalent depth and standard in these aspects. The unit offers the development of writing, speaking, listening and reading skills in the academic context and a strong focus on language development in an IELTS context.

Reading and listening
* Listening to lectures, seminars and other spoken English texts
* Obtaining written information from books, newspapers, journals, internet and other sources
* Recognising and selecting relevant information
* Understanding and interpreting data and other non-text information
* Practice with question types in IELTS reading and listening papers
Writing
* Writing notes from written and spoken source texts
* Writing summaries
* Presenting information from graphs and diagrams in written form (IELTS)
* Writing short discursive essays (both academic and IELTS-related)
* Writing reports relevant to the field
* Referring to sources, paraphrasing and avoiding plagiarism
* Adopting an academic style
Speaking
* Participating in seminars and responding appropriately to others
* Summarising information orally
* Giving short formal oral presentations
* Practice with IELTS discussion topics
Language
* Focus on language systems, including grammar and vocabulary in an IELTS context
* Learning language appropriate to academic discourse
* Building specialist vocabulary of the chosen field
Critical Thinking
* Exploring ideas critically
Examination Skills
* Preparing for exams effectively
* Managing time and coping with writing under pressure
