The aims of this unit are to provide knowledge of the current evidence base and treatment for people who are addicted to illicit drugs; to develop pharmacy practice skills relating to the provision of pharmaceutical care to drug misusers and to explore illicit drug use in the context of public health and society.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to: critically appraise the evidence base that supports the provision of treatment to drug misusers, describe the health and economic outcomes from providing treatment to drug misers, explain good practice in establishing and providing pharmaceutical care for drug misusers, and critically evaluate current drug policy in the context of individual, public health and community welfare outcomes.

Content:
Following an introduction and brief overview of links to earlier core units, a number of topics will be discussed using the general formula of:
Lecture style teaching, preset reading and group discussion.
Workshops will be activity based using skills taught elsewhere, for example Critical Appraisal. There will also be a visit to a treatment provider to gain more insight into real life practice. This visit is a compulsory part of this unit and an assignment is based on it.
This unit will utilise outside speakers who are experts in the field including service users and providers.
