The aim of this module is to introduce students to the range of skills necessary to carry out the social work process to an appropriately professional level.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the students should be able to:
* Use communication skills to form and develop relationships with service users/carers and other professionals (Key Role 1 Unit 1 Element 1.2; Key Role 2 Unit 5 Element 5.1 b, c & d);
* Negotiate the limits of relationships & confidentiality (Key Role 2 Unit 5 Element 5.1f; Knowledge Indicator 3e);
* Deal constructively with disagreements & conflicts (Key Role 5 Unit 17 Element 17.4 a-e);
* Transfer skills to new & unfamiliar contexts (Key Role 6 Unit 18 Element 18.3 d);
* Apply professional knowledge and skill to the social work process (Key Role 6 Unit 19 Element 19.1a);
* Challenge effectively & use professional assertiveness to justify decisions & uphold professional social work practice, values & ethics (Key Role 6 Unit 19 Element 19.2 a, b, c);

The interview process; negotiating the limits of confidentiality; engagement; 'door openers'; the SOLER model; active listening; open questioning; empathy; reflection & paraphrasing; pattern recognition; constructive challenging; closure; cultural differences in verbal & non-verbal communication; working with diversity in communication; working with difference in the wider community.
