To evaluate how low carbon building envelope solutions may be combined and integrated for the optimal through-life performance of low-carbon buildings.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit, students should:
* Have a critical awareness of the principles and methods of construction of low carbon building envelopes, embodied carbon, and their impact on whole building lifetime performance.
* Be able to evaluate the implications of low carbon solutions on construction and appearance.
* Be able to select and integrate appropriate low-carbon building envelope solutions to meet total L-C building performance requirements.

Skills:
To defend the cost/benefits/impacts of a selected low-carbon building envelope solution to a multi-disciplinary audience. (T, F, A)
To integrate of low-carbon building envelope solutions to meet specific design drivers/intent. (T, F, A)

Content:

* Low-carbon construction materials/methods.
* High performance glazings, environmental impact of (structural) glass, (from EU COST action C13).
* Double skin facades, including work at the HIVE façade testing facility.
* Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) envelope solutions
* Adaptive/intelligent and reconfigurable building envelopes for low-carbon performance
* Cost, benefit and impact analysis of low-carbon building envelope solutions.
