Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
This design project is based on an industrial process and is intended to give an introduction to a systematic approach to chemical engineering design.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students the student should be able to compare alternative routes for a process by technical/economic reasoning; prepare a process flowsheet together with mass and energy balances for the process; be able to consider energy integration and process optimisation, cost estimates and preliminary safety and hazard analysis. Plan and organise the use of group time. Prepare specification sheets for an individual process unit designed by the student and prepare a process and instrumentation diagram for a single unit.

Skills:
Analysis, synthesis problem solving and design. Taught/facilitated and assessed.

Content:
Use of commercial software design package; use of package for mass and energy balances and accessing the property data bank; use of CAD packages for data prediction. Working as a team and project management. Use of short cut methods in design. Making process decisions and exploring the consequences with and without the use of CAD.
