The aim is to give the student an understanding of the challenge which the environment presents to business and industry, and why and how business and industry should respond to this challenge.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit, students should be able to identify the role of environmental management systems in responding to the environmental challenge. They should understand the range of environmental management tools relevant to environmental management systems meeting the ISO 14001 and EMAS standards and how they applied together. They will also have gained an introduction to, and overview of, all the other modules of the IEM programme, both compulsory and optional.

Skills:
In studying the distance learning materials students will develop skills in self-study, supported by guidance in the student handbook and a guide to study provided in the Introduction Pack. In completing assignments students practice their written expression in essay form.

The environmental challenge, environmental legislation, environmental management systems, environmental science, an overview of Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Audit, Economic Analysis, Life Cycle Assessment, Clean Technology, Energy Management, Risk Management.
