The residential sessions are designed to:
(1) provide several key functions that are important to distance learning students. These include meeting their peers, academic tutors and student support staff, receiving lectures and tutorials from unit tutors, academics and practitioners and undertaking workshop and group work sessions;
(2) introduce the principles of environmental management tools and environmental management systems and to provide a practical appreciation of how they are applied;
(3) develop the student's ability to respond to conflicting views of sustainable development that relate to decision-making in organisations.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit students will have an understanding of:
* environmental management systems and have a detailed insight into the other environmental management tools addressed by the IEM MSc.
* the importance of a sustainability agenda in the overall strategy of an organisation.
* the practical application of topics covered in the compulsory units.

Skills:

* Students work in groups on a couple of case studies with tutor support, thus developing interpersonal skills (F);
* Oral communication skills will be developed through the presentation of the case study (F);
* Team and presentation skills (F).

Content:
Each day of the residential school will cover one of the compulsory units in the IEM programme. It will consist of lectures and groupwork.
