Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To extend the student's ability to analyse and model conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer, and apply this to engineering systems.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student will have an:
* Understanding of the concepts and equations governing heat transfer by conduction and be able to solve heat transfer problems of engineering importance.
* Understanding of the concepts and equations governing heat transfer by convection and be able to solve heat transfer problems of engineering importance.
* Understanding of the concepts and equations governing heat transfer by radiation and be able to solve heat transfer problems of engineering importance.

Skills:
Problem solving; numeracy; working independently; written communication.

Content:
HEAT CONDUCTION: Derivation of the general equation of conduction. Analytical and numerical solution of selected steady-state problems, including extended surfaces.
CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER: Review of the basic concepts of natural and forced convection. Laminar and turbulent flow in engineering heat transfer applications. Turbulence and its effect on heat transfer, empirical methods of solution for turbulent flow. Thermal Resistances and the lumped system approach. Convective boiling heat transfer.
THERMAL RADIATION: Review of principles of radiative heat transfer. Formulation of radiation equations for numerical solution and application to engineering heat transfer problems. Heat transfer problems involving combined modes of conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer.
HEAT EXCHANGERS: Review of the principles of heat exchanger design and the derivation of methods for sizing and predicting heat exchanger performance.
Topic for self study that could be examined.
