To familiarise the student with the role of design and creativity in innovation. To study the practical application of a number of tools and techniques for creativity and advanced design methods for innovation.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit the student will be able to:
* Describe the relationship between creativity, design and innovation.
* Discuss the conflicting drivers of modern design and innovation.
* Describe some of the underlying principles of creativity from psychology and other disciplines.
* Describe the role that product design discipline plays in delivering innovation to the market.
* Discuss some of the methods and approaches from product design that are used in industry to deliver innovation.
* Select and apply appropriate creative methods for technical problems.

Skills:
Building skills to deliver or manage innovation by having the ability to:
* apply the fundamental principles of creativity;
* select and apply methods from product design to improve the performance of existing systems and create new systems.

Content:
The unit introduces: the relationships between design, creativity and innovation and several advanced design methods for innovation.
Taught content includes: theories and current research on creativity in design; user-centred design and product styling; Technology Readiness Levels and Rapid Product Development.
A number of idea-to-innovation case studies are presented, in order to demonstrate the links between creativity, design and innovation.
A hands-on design-innovation activity is run to learn how to select and apply appropriate creative methods to solve technical problems. The main assessment involves writing a critical essay linking a tool, technique or approach to an industrial innovation context.
