Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The overall aim of this course is to provide an introduction to bio-inorganic chemistry with a focus on the role of d-, f- and p-block metals in biology.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this Unit, students should be able to:
* Demonstrate an understanding of how and why the coordination chemistry of metals are used in biological systems;
* Account for the bonding features relating to structural and reactivity patterns in simple biomolecules;
* Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of metals in medicine as therapeutics or diagnostics;
* Demonstrate an understanding of the reasons for metal activity and toxicity in living systems.

Skills:
Problem solving (T, F, A), Scientific writing (F, A), critical thinking (F, A).

Content:
Metals in biology - basic coordination chemistry and analytical methods used in bioinorganic chemistry - metal containing enzyme systems - structural role of metals - metals in medicine.
