Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aims of this unit are:
* To introduce current theories and concepts in relation to the systems of language.
* To provide students with an insight into issues surrounding language awareness and their implications for L2 classroom practices.
* To help students develop an understanding of beliefs and attitudes about language, and the effects these have on language use, learning, and teaching.
* To support students in the process of taking informed decisions about their teaching of English as an international language.
* To develop in students a more critical understanding and sensitivity towards their own language teaching approach through an examination of language systems and issues.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit students will be able to:
* Identify, explore, and discuss issues concerning the systems of language and their implications for language use, learning, and teaching.
* Apply textually-oriented and socially-oriented approaches to (critical) discourse analysis.
* Identify and critique recent studies on language awareness and discuss their relevance to particular language teaching contexts.
* Analyse language awareness issues in a particular pedagogical context and design a training project which addresses those issues, employing a variety of strategies and providing a rationale for their selection and use.
* Evaluate national language education documents (e.g. policies and curricula) in light of current understandings of language awareness issues.
