Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To provide an understanding of how the design process is used in obtaining integrated engineering solutions, the steps taken and where detail is required.
To introduce a variety of sensors, actuators and their characteristics.
To introduce the concept of control engineering as applied to integrated mechanical and electrical systems.
To introduce the concept of automation.
To introduce different types of controllers, including microcontrollers, embedded systems, industrial PCs and PLCs and their interfaces to sensors/actuators and software solutions.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student should be able to:
* Think through the design solution to a simple integrated engineering problem, using conceptual thinking in the process.
* Develop a design from an initial brief into a conceptual solution being able to detail the requirement specifications for the design, functional diagram and identify the functions that require control.
* Understand the main concepts related to sensors and actuators such as accuracy, repeatability, hysteresis, saturation and relate them to the design solution.
* Understand the suitability of different controllers and their applicability in the automation of processes, embedded control and industrial automation.

Skills:
Lateral thinking; problem solving; independent and team working.

Content:
Introduction to the design process for integrated engineering systems and products: requirements capture, conceptual design, embodiment design and detail design.
Introduction to sensors and actuators
Introduction to control and automation
Introduction to controllers, interfaces and their software.
