Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To provide students with an opportunity to advance their practical knowledge by participating in lectures, field visits and laboratory exercises.
To provide opportunities for students to participate in group activities and develop higher level skills relevant to electrical power systems engineering.
To provide opportunities for students to meet staff who teach and support the programme and for 'face to face' discussions.
To provide networking opportunities.
To form teams in anticipation of the group design project unit and to give them the opportunity to work together.

Learning Outcomes:
Students will gain comprehensive understanding of the structure and expectations of the programme including an overview of effective study skill techniques.
Students will gain experience in laboratory technique and methodologies applicable to electrical power system engineering.
Students will develop academic and professional communication and networking skills, including the ability to report on actions clearly, autonomously and competently.
Students will develop higher level skills relevant to electrical power systems engineering through attending a range of lectures, seminars and workshops.
Students will gain up-to date insights and information concerning current issues and developments in the electrical power industry.
Students will gain insights into current research issues pertaining to the field of electrical power engineering.
Students will develop team working skills in sessions relating to specific areas of the programme which benefit from a workshop approach.

Skills:
Hands on technical skills from the laboratory exercises. Acquisition of practical knowledge by participating in the unit activities, including group working, communications, critical thinking and presentation skills.

Content:
This is the first of two residential schools, each running over 7 days and hosted at the University of Bath campus.
With the exception of group design activities, laboratory exercises and group feedback which are conducted separately for Residentials 1 and 2 respectively, other activities are combined for all students.
Content includes lectures by prominent speakers from the power industry and course tutors, field visits, laboratory activities, a librarian-led tutorial on research tools and methods, group activity presentations and group feedback at the last session of the final day.
A team building activity commences on the first day and threads through the residential school, preparing the students for the group design project.
