Aims:
The course aims to consolidate language already acquired, for example in Stage 3 Semester 1, and to encourage students to extend their active and passive vocabulary, to improve accuracy and the complexity of the language used, to increase their confidence in using the target language for spontaneous responses. The course aims to help students access increasingly more demanding reading and listening material.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the course students will be able to:
* Use the target language in a variety of situations and for a variety of purposes.
* Give clear detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest.
* Use simple language to express their opinions.
* Understand the gist and detail of recorded audio material.
* Find specific, predictable information in everyday material using Hiragana, Katakana and Chinese characters and understand informal letters relating to personal information.
* Write short essays on topics of personal and general interest and write accounts of experiences including opinions and reactions in connected text with a degree of accuracy for basic structures.
* Actively use 200 Chinese characters.

Content:
The course consolidates previously acquired language structures and skills and develops the four core competences of listening, speaking, reading and writing. More complex language structures are introduced and practised, such as relative clauses and additional functionality of verbs. Reading and listening material on new topic areas will help students extend their passive vocabulary. Topics of general interest and cultural relevance will be presented, helping students to express and dispute opinions and to encourage spontaneous responses. The course significantly extends the students' passive knowledge and active accurate use of Chinese characters.
