Aims:
To develop ideas, theories and techniques of teaching and learning and refine skills in delivering, and receiving, effective education in clinical contexts.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit participants should be able to:
* demonstrate a critical understanding of how adults learn
* demonstrate an awareness of the differing learning styles of individuals
* demonstrate a learner-centred approach to teaching
* conduct an educational needs analysis
* engage critically with the learning and teaching literature in order to design an educational intervention appropriate to the needs of a learner
* plan and structure a teaching episode appropriately for learners
* demonstrate the effective use of information management and technology in teaching
* contribute positively to a culture of teaching and learning within a primary care practice organisation
* critique the benefits of interprofessional and multiprofessional learning
* differentiate between the nature and purpose of mentoring and of clinical and educational supervision
* recognise the relationship between mentoring, supervision and reflective practice
* identify the different forms that mentoring and clinical supervision (formal and informal) can take and their benefits and limitations
* critically evaluate techniques that describe how to ask for, organise, receive and give forms of mentorship and supervision

Skills:
On completion of this unit participants should be able to:
* Plan a programme of learning for a topic within their area of professional expertise
* Present a topic utilising a variety of learning and teaching methods and deliver it clearly and effectively, identifying the needs of the audience, tailoring the presentation and encouraging active involvement
* Demonstrate the ability to facilitate a small group
* Observe and evaluate teaching in practice
* Demonstrate the willingness and ability to ask for and learn from feedback on performance as a teacher
* Plan and manage their learning through reflecting on and analysing their own learning needs.
* Demonstrate the ability to give effective feedback to a colleague
* Communicate effectively with colleagues and tutors including through asynchronous online discussions.

Content:

* Introduction to the way we learn: learning styles, Kolb learning cycle
* Identifying and addressing learning needs: learning needs analysis, use of Johari window, decision support tools, PUNs and DENs
* Designing for learning: creating aims, objectives and learning outcomes, curriculum design, e-learning
* Using appropriate learning methods: teaching approaches, small and large group teaching, constructive alignment, assessment and feedback, peer assessment
* Learning as individuals and learning in teams: multi-professional and inter-professional learning, communities of practice, professional development
* Reflecting and evaluating learning: the reflective practitioner, mentoring, supervision and coaching, evaluation of teaching and learning.
