Supplementary Assessment: MA50174 Mandatory extra work (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: You must have some programming experience and knowledge of basic numerical methods to take this unit.
Description: Aims:
To teach a critical understanding of numerical techniques relevant to applied mathematics. To teach the efficient practical implementation of these techniques on a wide range of practical problems.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course the students will be able to program efficiently and accurately using MatLab. They will have knowledge of a wide range of continuous and discrete problems arising in applications. They will be able to choose, implement and critically appraise the performance of numerical methods for solving problems in applications.

Skills:
Programming (T, A), experience in numerical algorithms (T, A), applications in Sciences (T, A).

Content:
1. Introduction to MatLab and its functionality. MatLab programming. Scripts and functions. Graphics.
2. Linear and nonlinear algebraic systems, eigenvalue calculation, singular value decomposition, unconstrained minimization. Discrete models in applications, difference equations, graphs and networks. Applications, e.g. graph partitioning, modelling the internet, electrical networks, the spread of infectious diseases, medical imaging.
3. Initial value problems. Convergence and stability. Stiff systems. MatLab ODE solvers. Boundary-value problems, finite difference methods. Spatial heterogeneity. Reaction-diffusion problems. Applications, e.g. population dynamics, heterogeneous spatial models in mathematical biology, flow in random media, combustion.

Notes:
* This unit catalogue is applicable for the 2015/16 academic year only. Students continuing their studies into 2016/17 and beyond should not assume that this unit will be available in future years in the format displayed here for 2015/16.
* Programmes and units are subject to change at any time, in accordance with normal University procedures.
* Availability of units will be subject to constraints such as staff availability, minimum and maximum group sizes, and timetabling factors as well as a student's ability to meet any pre-requisite rules.
