To examine the principles, concepts and approaches employed in procurement and supply management.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, the student should be able to:
* Understand the role and importance of supply chain management (SCM) within the organisation;
* Apply core SCM techniques to industry problems from the perspective of the supply chain manager or management consultant;
* Understand and analyse the overall sourcing process including negotiations and contracting issues;
* Understand and apply core negotiation techniques and tactics;
* Critically evaluate the concepts and techniques of lean and agile thinking in supply networks;
* Appreciate the challenges of managing risks in complex networks.

Content:
Supply Chain Management is concerned with the movement of products, services, finances and information from raw materials to the end-user. More and more, it is also concerned with the recovery of finished goods for recycling, remanufacturing or reuse. This module examines the management of external suppliers in order to reduce costs, drive innovation and protect shareholder wealth. It takes the point of view of the supply chain manager who will be expected to improve product quality, increase responsiveness, reduce risk, and drive innovation while still cutting year-on-year input costs. The topic should therefore be of interest to students concerned with issues of building business relationships, negotiation, risk and sustainability, and developing analytical, presentation and people skills.
The University of Bath School of Management is recognised as one of the world┬┐s leading centres for the study of Purchasing, Procurement and Supply Management. The Centre for Research in Strategic Purchasing and Supply (CRiSPS) is a focal point for much of this work, focusing on such issues as inter-organisational networking, customer-supplier relationship assessment, and cost and value transparency in supply relationships. CRiSPS works closely with a large number of private and public sector companies; these take an active role in research projects and often participate in the implementation of new theories and concepts. The expertise generated within CRiSPS and the linkages with other research programmes, serves to underpin the theories, models and tools that are taught in this unit. In addition, CRiSPS is supported by colleagues from the Information, Decision and Operations (IDO) group at the School of Management).
