To understand from a firm-level perspective how different subnational, national and supranational cultural, social, political and economic contexts affect the successful operation of international business.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit, candidates should be able to understand the direct interrelationships between subnational, national and supranational cultural, social, political and economic contexts and how they influence international firm activities.

Skills:
Intellectual ability to synthesise theories and empirical evidence across the fields of cultural, social, political and economic contexts as they relate to international business will be required and enhanced.
Practical ability to analyse, identify and relate cultural, social, political and economic contexts to micro- and macro-level firm operations will be necessary and developed.

Content:
Topics covered will include why, how and to what degree cultures, social, political and economic institutions and structures affect different aspects of international firms operations and the extent to which firms can exploit or ameliorate these affects. The unit is split into five sections covering the following topics:
(i) Myths, realities, trends and evolution in national and non-national cultures
(ii) Dynamics of social change: convergence, competition, and conflict
(iii) Catalysing and ossifying effects of political and related institutions
(iv) Intentional and unintentional effects of micro- and macro-economic policy
(v) Synthesizing the effects of cultural, social, political and economic contexts in the international business environment.
