Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
This unit aims to equip students with an understanding of the strategic management of product, service and process innovation. It will explore how firms can create and capture value from new ideas, drawing from the experience of successful and unsuccessful innovators.
The unit will explore the ways organisations can achieve the commercial potential of new ideas, through investments in R&D and engagement with users, complementors and other external actors. The unit will also examine how organisations can profit from innovative efforts by drawing different mechanisms of appropriating value and taking up strategic positions in innovation eco-systems. Particular attention will be paid new emerging practices, including open innovation. The goal is to explore the ways that innovation management can help to enable organisations - public and private, large and small, manufacturing and services - navigate industrial and technical change and sustain competitive advantage.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit students should be able to:
* Appraise and interpret different types and degrees of innovation.
* Critically evaluate advanced management practices in innovation across multiple sectors and contexts.
* Demonstrate an appreciation of the different mechanisms for capturing value from innovation.
* Evaluate the skills and capabilities required to manage lead in the design and introduction of new products, processes and services.
* Judge the issues faced by large organisations firms in attempting strategic renewal through innovation
* Develop strategies to help resolve key challenges of innovation across organizational boundaries and within innovation eco-systems.
* Adapt and utilise basic tools and methodologies of innovation management.
