This course aims to provide participants with a sound ability to safely prepare and supply personalised medicines for patients in both primary and secondary care settings.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Explain in detail what the term `individualised medicines' means and describe the major classes of drug product encompassed
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the legal, ethical and scientific knowledge required of a pharmacist for the safe preparation and supply of individualised medicines (10.1.d Knows how)
3. Demonstrate a sound ability to solve problems related to the preparation and supply of individualised medicines.
4. Demonstrate how relevant pharmaceutical science is applied in the design and development of individualised medicines (10.1.e shows how)
5. Instruct patients on the safe and effective use of individualised medicines, including the provision of advice on appropriate storage and shelf life (10.2.2.c)
6. Analyse prescriptions/hospital administration charts for individualised medicines for validity and clarity (10.2.2.d Knows how)
7. Clinically evaluate the appropriateness of individualised medicines(10.2.2.e Knows how)
8. Demonstrate how to supply individualised medicines safely and efficiently, within legal requirements and best practice (10.2.2.j Shows how)
9. Ensure quality of ingredients used to produce individualised medicines (10.2.3.a Knows how)
10. Apply pharmaceutical principles to the formulation, preparation and packaging of individualised medicines (10.2.3.b does)
11. Use relevant pharmaceutical calculations to verify the safety of doses and administration rates of individualised medicines including chemotherapy and TPN (10.2.3.c does)
12. Develop quality management systems and appropriate records relevant to the preparation of individualised medicines (10.2.3.d Shows how)

17. Describe how to manage resources, including human resources, in order to ensure workflow and minimised risks in the workplace where individualised medicines are prepared e.g. aseptic suites. (10.2.3.i shows how)
18. Be aware of the health and safety relevant to the preparation of individualised medicines and the pharmacists responsibilities in relation to this (10.2.3.j shows how)
19. Describe how the pharmacist should work effectively within teams to ensure that safe and effective systems are being followed when individualised medicines are being prepared e.g. chemotherapy, radiopharmaceuticals, monoclonal antibodies. (10.2.3.k knows how)
20. Ensure the application of appropriate infection control and contamination control measures relevant to the preparation of individualised medicines (10.2.3.l shows how)
21. Describe how to supervise others involved in service delivery relevant to individualised medicines e.g. compounding technicians (10.2.3.m knows how)
22. Identify, report and prevent errors and unsafe preparation of individualised medicines(10.2.3.n knows how)
23. Provide accurate written or oral information relevant to individualised medicines that is appropriate to the needs of patients, the public and other healthcare professionals (10.2.4.h shows how)

Skills:

* Students should develop the skills to oversee and perform the manufacture of Individualised medicines..
* Students should develop the skills to solve problems related to the use of individualised medicines including applying pharmaceutical science to patient care.

* Legal, ethical and scientific issues related to individualised medicines.
* Extemporaneous manufacturing including aseptic preparation of individualised medicines e.g. chemotherapy, and practise of aseptic techniques in non-sterile environments.
* Tour of aseptic facility.
* The use and supply of investigational medicinal products.
* The use and supply of protein-based medicines (biologicals).
* Biotechnology of the future.
* Quality Management Systems related to individualised medicine manufacture and supply.
* Environmental contamination and control.
