* To introduce key concepts and theoretical perspectives in the analysis of religion, politics and policy in liberal democracies
* To gain a better understanding of contemporary religious issues in politics and policy in Europe and in comparative perspective
* To examine the ways in which religion influences politics and policy.

Learning Outcomes:
A student who completes the unit should be able to demonstrate:
* critical understanding of crucial debates about religion, politics and policy making in contemporary Europe
* critical understanding of the relevance of religious issues in politics and policy in Europe and elsewhere
* ability to engage constructively in focused discussion about the relevant topics of this unit
* ability to give effective oral presentations to peers
* ability to make use of relevant material to write clearly and analytically.

Skills:
Critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of quantitative and qualitative research. Skills in effective learning and language are also developed.

Content:
This unit provides an introduction to historical and contemporary issues related to the interaction between religion, politics and policy in Europe and in comparative perspective.
The unit explores why, how and when religion matters in politics and policy making in liberal democracies with particular emphasis on political science perspectives. The unit first examines the impact of models of church-state relations and secularization on party competition, political participation and policy making. The unit then investigates the evolving role of religions actors, movements and interests in influencing politics and policy through agenda setting, lobbying, mobilization, and electoral activities in liberal democracies. Finally, the unit engages a comparative perspective across a range of contemporary issues related to religion, politics and policy such as reproductive justice and sexuality rights, education, expression of religion in the public sphere, as well as the integration and protection of religious minorities.
