| Description:
| Aims: To provide an investigation of Architectural Theory and History of Urban design in the post-war period. Themes within contemporary city theory will be identified via a discussion of their proponents. Links will be made to Design Studio that runs after this unit. Students who have completed this unit should be able to demonstrate the utilization of a major theme in architectural theory and history in the critical appraisal of practice; demonstrate an understanding of the contemporary built environment as filtered through assigned texts, and to set out a critical appraisal of the arguments presented; research an architectural topic of theoretical/speculative interest. Learning Outcomes: Students who have completed this unit will be able to demonstrate the following: knowledge of: * the cultural, social and intellectual histories, theories and technologies that influence the design of buildings; * the influence of history and theory on the spatial, social, and technological aspects of architecture; * how the theories, practices and technologies of the arts influence architectural design; * the creative application of the fine arts and their relevance and impact on architecture; * theories of urban design and the planning of communities; * the influence of the design and development of cities, past and present on the contemporary built environment. Skills: Independent research; presenting arguments coherently in Powerpoint and written form. Content: Working in pairs students are asked to prepare a Powerpoint presentation of 30 minutes duration and an associated written paper on an allocated theorist. Assessment will be based on clarity of argument, criticality, depth of research and overall coherence. |
