Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To introduce students to the concepts of limit state design and its practical application to reinforced and prestressed concrete, embedding sustainability, creativity, and structural optimisation in their understanding of design and construction of concrete structures.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
* apply the principles of limit state design to concrete structures;
* assess and evaluate the behaviour of concrete structures including the use of novel reinforcement and strengthening materials;
* design sustainable concrete structures and critique the need for optimisation and the minimisation of material use;
* design and analyse concrete structures using plasticity theory;
* evaluate critically current practice and new research led developments, and propose new and innovative solutions;
* deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate their conclusions clearly;
* analyse the benefits and/or limitations of concrete technologies.

Fibre reinforced polymer reinforcement.
Fabric formwork and shape optimisation.
Strengthening of concrete structures using advanced composites.
