Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To understand the concept of sustainable development and introduce the tools that can be used to minimise environmental impacts and increase the resource efficiency of process engineering solutions.
To understand how resource use and process emissions can impact the environment and the stakeholders they will work with in their future career.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit the student will be able to:
* Understand the principles of sustainable development and corporate responsibility in industrial processes.
* Describe the impacts of resource use and waste on the major natural cycles, ecosystem services and their implications on ethical & social issues.
* Describe the principle technologies for renewable and non-renewable energy generation.
* Explain the implications on industrial ecology of the design, site location and environmental management in sustainable development.

Skills:

* Consider environmental, ethical/social and commercial needs (T,A)
* Apply appropriate tools and methodologies in the context of process engineering (T,F, A)
* Be able to recognise the integration of activities and roles within the organisation and supply chains which are impacted by chemical engineering (T,F,A)
* Critically analyse information and construct logical arguments (T, F, A)
* Communicate effectively in writing to different stakeholders (T,F, A)

Content:

* A background to the Earth's natural cycles and ecosystem services, potential environmental and ethical/social issues and the interactions with resource use and waste production.
* Renewable and non-renewable materials and energy generation.
* The concept of sustainable development and how this can be integrated into an organisation's strategic plan.
* Identifying stakeholders and eliciting their views.
* An introduction to the management processes such as EMS and Corporate Responsibility that exist within organisations and the need to support the value chains within the supply chain. This includes the consideration of instruments such as Eco Labels and Responsible Sourcing that may be prerequisites of developing and maintaining market presence.
* A review of the relevant standards that could be encountered in relation to these processes.
* An introduction to the design concepts, including the energy and waste hierarchies as well as tools such as the circular economy and the life cycle approach to minimise resource use and waste generation in process engineering.
* Report writing in relation to key stakeholders, the use of marking criteria, self and peer review and how to give constructive feedback.
* Techniques for critical analysis of information.
