Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To allow students to experience a practical investigative project typical of research in an academic environment. To further develop and reinforce the skills necessary to undertake advanced, open-ended research work in a chemical topic.

Learning Outcomes:
After studying the Unit, student should be able to:
* Demonstrate non-routine experimental techniques appropriate to the chosen project;
* Record experimental observations and data in an efficient manner;
* Conduct appropriate analysis of observations and collected data to draw appropriate conclusions;
* Present results in a variety of formats and place them into context of other researchers' work;
* Demonstrate the ability to plan and conduct an experimental programme leading on from the project undertaken.

Skills:
Planning and organisation (T, F, A), Study skills (F), Information and communication technology (T, F, A), Written communication (T, F, A), Oral communication (T, F, A)Group working (F).

Content:
A topic for investigation will be selected in conjunction with a supervising member of staff and a program of experimental work planned. Regular contact with the supervisor will be maintained to offer guidance and formative feedback. In addition to the experimental aspects, background chemical literature will be studied. Aspects of project planning, laboratory safety, report writing skills and oral presentations will be introduced as appropriate.
