All of the programme's units contribute to, and have been mapped to, the programme aims. All units contribute to aims 6 and 7. This unit will make a key contribution to Programme aim 3:
3. develop students' knowledge, understanding and critical analysis skills in respect of contemporary trends, issues, policies and practices at the intersection between international education and globalisation

This unit aims to equip students with an understanding of the key issues associated with globalisation and the implications these have for education and education policy. In addition to programme aim 3 the unit aims to enable students to:
1. analyse critically theories and concepts which explain the origins of globalisation and its impact on national and local contexts (social, economic, cultural and environmental)
2. understand and critique policy development in relation to underlying global and domestic pressures
3. examine the complex relationship between globalisation and the convergence and divergence of education policy across states
4. evaluate critically the potential impact of particular education policies in the context of economic competitiveness and issues of equity within and between states
5. critically analyse the role of culture in the development and implementation of international education policy (contribution to programme aim 5).

Learning Outcomes:
Together, the MA IEG units contribute to programme learning outcomes 1-7 for knowledge and understanding. The unit specific knowledge and understanding outcomes follow.

Having studied the unit, students will be able to:
1. identify and clarify the main educational debates associated with the phenomenon of globalisation
2. critique major theories on the relationship between globalisation and its differential impact on states; apply these theories in educational policy contexts
3. identify the factors leading to the convergence or divergence of educational policy in different national and cultural contexts and their respective impacts on economic competitiveness and equity
4. articulate and illustrate the significance of globalisation in educational areas such as citizenship education, and / or education for sustainable development, amongst others, and on educational practice such as quality assurance and assessment
5. critically evaluate how educational policy development can exploit a benefit associated with globalisation or act to mediate an adverse effect of globalisation.

Skills:
Together, the MA IEG units contribute to programme learning outcomes 1-8 for intellectual and professional practical skills. Therefore having studied the unit, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate sensitivity to the values, viewpoints and interests of others
2. act both autonomously and collaboratively in planning and implementing tasks
3. demonstrate clarity of thought and quality of argument in educational issues relating to international education and globalisation
4. make critical use of the literature and professional experience the field of education, synthesising information from a number of sources in order to gain coherent understandings and make informed judgements in the absence of complete data
5. apply knowledge and skills critically to policy and practice in international education and globalisation including critiquing the evidence underpinning policy/ practice (and change in practice)
6. formulate and articulate well-reasoned arguments, insights and conclusions and communicate this to specialist and non-specialist audiences orally and in writing
7. contribute effectively to professional debate and discussion in the fields of international education and globalisation.
8. assess their own learning needs and enhance their future professional practice in international education and globalisation
In addition students wiill be able to:
* design an educational policy strategy to exploit a benefit associated with globalisation or act to mediate an adverse effect of globalisation.

Transferable/ key skills
Together, the MA IEG units contribute to programme learning outcomes 1-13 for transferable/ key skills. Therefore, having studied the unit, students will be able to demonstrate:
1. cross-cultural sensitivity and effective interpersonal communication skills

4. problem solving and decision making skills applied to complex and unpredictable situations and familiar and unfamiliar problems

Content:
The unit will address the following content areas; some of these will be addressed through individual sessions whilst others will be combined within and/ or across sessions:
1. Theories on the origins of globalisation and its influence on national and cultural contexts
2. Convergences and divergences in state policy responses to globalisation
3. The relationship between education policy and economic competitiveness in different national contexts
4. Local and global markets in education: their operation and regulation
5. The influence of international agencies and organisations such as the World Bank, OECD, UNESCO and the EU
6. The knowledge economy and the emergence of mass higher education
7. Global trends in assessment and examinations
8. The theory and practice of 'adjectival' forms of education such as citizenship education or education for sustainable development that are relevant within an international context
9. Changing definitions of, and influences on, educational quality in the context of globalisation
10. The expansion of, and impact of, international systems of education
11. Mediation of global policy through its national and local implementation
12. The implications of social media for the development of education within a context of globalisation.
