The aims of this unit are to develop the communication, planning and critical evaluation skills needed to perform at a postgraduate professional level, and to develop an appropriate understanding of modern electronic systems design and manufacture.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
Critically appraise, design to a specification and manufacture an electronic circuit, including knowledge of practical issues in electronic circuit fabrication, commercial and financial constraints.
Communicate their work to technical and non-technical audiences.
Critically evaluate solutions to complex engineering problems.
Plan, monitor, adjust and document self-learning to improve performance (e.g. continuing professional development; CPD).
Plan, monitor, adjust and document a programme of work on an on-going basis.
Demonstrate structured reflection on own performance and skills development.
Exercise initiative and personal responsibility.

Advanced automated and manual circuit fabrication techniques (TFA).
Electronic circuit testing and measurement (TFA).
Electronic design automation tools for design and test of electronic circuits (TFA).

Content:
Introduction to the key concepts required for the manufacture of electronic circuits.
Principles of printed circuit board manufacture and electronic systems packaging.
Design tools for simulating electronic circuits, printed circuit board design, layout and simulation.
Discuss examples of ethical dilemmas in engineering practice, and the role of professional codes of practice.
Written communication in engineering.
Oral communication in engineering.
Time management and workload planning.
Techniques of critical analysis for the engineering literature.
