* To develop an advanced and comprehensive understanding of research methods, data analysis, and research ethical considerations
* To develop an individual original research project proposal including a thorough literature review, and prepare an application for ethics approval

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
* Understand advanced research methods including qualitative and quantitative data analysis procedures
* Demonstrate a critical understanding of the many factors influencing appropriate research design
* Identify the ethical issues and principles that have to be addressed when designing and undertaking a research project
* Understand the methods for collecting, synthesising, interpreting and presenting data
* Plan and produce an original research project proposal
* Perform a comprehensive literature review within a given area of study
* Prepare the documents required for an ethics application

Content:
Advanced research methods and statistics (in-depth analysis of research designs and their limitations; ethical issues and principles; advanced statistical analysis; advanced qualitative analysis; data presentation and interpretation; reviewing literature)
Analysis and interpretation of research outputs (students will perform a critical appraisal of an article from the literature as a result of group discussions, but individually produce a critical appraisal report)
Development of research ideas / writing research proposals (students will prepare a proposal for an individual original research project, which will require preparation of a study protocol paper and ethics application).
