Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To introduce the concepts and theories of depth psychology and use them to develop the student's understanding of organizational processes; and to identify some of each student's own strengths and vulnerabilities as organizational participant and future managers.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, students should:
* have a sound understanding of core psychoanalytic concepts, theories and ideas;
* be able to use this knowledge and understanding to make sense of a variety of organizational phenomena, including leadership, group behaviour, organizational culture and conflict;
* have a good awareness of the influence of unconscious processes on organizational and group dynamics, as well as on their own experiences as members of organizations;
* demonstrate ability to work effectively with peers in class groupings and discussion.

Skills:

* understanding of key concepts used to make sense of different organizational phenomena (T/A)
* critical engagement with the subject matter and examples of practice, including own behaviour (F/A)
* research and writing skills (F/A)
* ability to debate issues, discuss and communicate about behavioural issues in organizational settings with peers in group settings (F/T).

Content:
Core concepts and theories of depth psychology: desire, repression and the unconscious, narcissism, symbolism and sublimation. Identity and mental personality. Interpretation and the use of psychoanalytic interpretations on cultural phenomena. The analysis of jokes, stories and myths. Leaders and followers, the personality of leaders and transference. Group dynamics and group dysfunctions. Organizational and individual pathologies, authoritarianism and organizational decay. Gender construction in organizations.
