* To provide students with a critical understanding of the notion of political commitment in European culture in the 20th century and beyond
* To help students to understand the relationship between literary and filmic aesthetics and politically committed artistic practice
* To allow students to situate politically committed literature and film in its historical context.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
* Analyse 'politically committed' works of literature and film in their historical context;
* Draw critical comparisons between different approaches to politically writing and filmmaking;
* Engage with critical opinion on works of 'politically committed' film and literature and produce their own responses to such opinion;
* Discuss the relationship between aesthetic form and political engagement.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.

Content:
In the unit, students will have the opportunity to engage with a series of key examples of politically committed literature and filmmaking in the 20th century and beyond. These will include examples of various kinds of avant-garde practice, as well as the work of socialist realist, existentialist and critical Marxist authors and filmmakers. The selection of texts will also include contemporary examples of engagement with the notion of political commitment. They will also be introduced to theories of art and artistic commitment in the context of modernity and postmodernity.
