Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
Over the last twenty years one of the most significant and controversial developments in European Politics has been the electoral rise of Far Right parties. One of the most durable parties in this respect has been the French Front National (FN) which has become a permanent feature on the French political landscape. The aim of the unit is to analyse why the FN has made significant electoral progress, look at the controversial nature of the party's policies and ask why many French citizens vote for the FN. While the main focus of the course is contemporary, the debate is also linked to both France and Europe's historical past and also situated in a comparative European context, focusing on the rise of Far Right parties in other French-speaking countries such as Switzerland and Belgium.
The unit will be taught in French.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
* Gain a critical understanding of key theoretical, historical and contemporary definitions e.g. fascism, Nazism, 'far-right', 'extreme right', 'radical right' etc.
