* To introduce key concepts and theoretical perspectives in the analysis of the politics of gender
* To gain a better understanding of feminist mobilization and gender politics in France and in comparative perspective
* To examine the ways in which gender influences politics and policy.

Learning Outcomes:
A student who completes the unit should be able to demonstrate:
* critical understanding of crucial debates around gender, equality, and policy making in contemporary France;
* critical understanding of the relevance of gender equality in France and elsewhere;
* ability to apply these insights to the comparative analysis of gender equality policies;
* ability to engage constructively in focused discussion on the relevant topics of this unit in French;
* ability to give effective oral presentations to peers in French;
* ability to make use of relevant material to write clearly and analytically in French.

Skills:
Critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork and the planning/ conduct/ reporting of quantitative and qualitative research. Skills in effective learning and language are also developed. The unit is taught in French.

Content:
This unit provides an introduction to gender, politics and policy in France and investigates a broad set of policies addressing gender and sexuality issues in France, Western Europe, North America and at the international level. The unit explores why, how and when gender dynamics matter in politics and public policy. The unit begins with an overview of the evolution of French feminist movements over time in comparative perspective. The unit then discusses a range of gender issues including political participation and representation, reproduction, employment, work-life balance issues, gender-based violence, and LGBTQI rights. We will examine this broad range of gender issues in a comparative perspective and draw on a variety of research methods.
