To introduce advanced process design, concepts and tools that can be applied to existing plant designs and industrial examples.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students the student should be able:
* To undertand and analyse process flowsheets, mass and energy balances;
* To understand and analyse piping and intrumentation diagrams;
* To analyse and provide recommendations following systematic chemical engineering principles;
* To plan plant operating, maintenance and commissioning schedules;
* To carry out preliminary safety and hazard analysis;
* To plan and organise the use of group time.

Content:

* Plant layouts including site, plot and equipment layouts
* Scheduling, commissioning and start-up/shut down of chemical processes.
* P&IDs, safety instrumented systems, advanced control and instrumentation,
* Safe isolations for maintenance and engineering drawings
* Computer based process simulation
* Risk and hazard analysis, including HAZOP and other safety assessment techniques
* Sizing of safety relief valves and pressure relief systems
* Individual and group project management
* Making process decisions and exploring the consequences.
